What can you do?
Don't leave home just yet! With good advice, quick action and the correct products you can start winning the battle so that they'll be the ones leaving!
The first step is to follow our useful guide to protect against moths!
Identify the problem – Clothes or Food Moths
a) Locate the Moths & Larvae. If found in the wardrobe then remove all garments from the wardrobe or drawers and thoroughly vacuum. Use the attachments available with your machine to get into all the corners & shelves, cracks & crevices etc. Vacuuming is essential to combat the moth. Moth larvae will thrive on human & pet hair, lint & other dead insects, but the vacuum cleaner is a very effective way of removing adult moths & also the larvae & eggs from fabrics & out of reach places.
b) Seal areas where moths may be hiding, such as cracks in flooring, shelves, skirting... especially places where crumbs and dirt can build up.
c) Place moth deterrents in wardrobes and drawers before replacing the garments. Use Natural Moth Repellents such as Cedar Wood Hang Ups, Rings and Balls – Cedar is an excellent Moth Fighter because it smells great to humans, but is repulsive to moths.
Line drawers and shelves with Cedar Wood Liners and use a cedar spray on wardrobes lined with unfinished natural wood.
Protect clothes in wardrobes and drawers naturally and effectively with Moth Proofers and Moth Balls. Remember the modern Moth Balls provide effective protection without the old moth ball fragrance! Orphea is another Natural Clothes Protector, the highly effective blend is based on the extracts of numerous plants and flowers.
Use Orphea Strips for hangers & drawers, Orphea Hanging Diffusers in cupboards & wardrobes and Orphea Salvalana Spray for carpets, rugs & curtains. Colibri Hanging Sachets are another ideal natural solution for protecting drawers and cupboards.
Male moths are attracted to pheromones, therefore using a Pheromone Moth Trap means the male moths are caught on the glue inside the trap with a slow release pheromone strip. Consequently, infestation is reduced as females do not mate.
d) If you find moths in the kitchen the Indian Meal Moth is probably to blame. Using Anti Food Moth Traps are a safe way to deal with them. These Moth Traps are efficient against Food, Flour and Indian Meal Moths. With no odour or insecticide there's complete peace of mind.
e) Once gone you want to stop them coming back!
Using a Moth Killer Spray is a very effective way to treat clothes and soft furnishings.
Correct storage is essential
Grown moths do no eat woollens, they just reproduce. So you rarely find damage in garments that are frequently used. However just as our grandparents used to do, it is a good idea to take the items you don't use much or to be stored outside and shake them, even beat them.
Moths seek food and urine stains, sweat or dead skin to feed on, so keeping clothes & woollens clean will offer some protection, but correctly storing out of season items creates a barrier against the moths. Storing clothes in garment covers and your sweaters in sweater bags will give an impenetrable layer to keep them at bay.
Don't forget to store blankets and duvets in suitable storage bags too!
Protect them while in storage because moths thrive in dark, undisturbed places. Using cedar items in storage bags and boxes will provide an effective moth protection.
Don't ignore the problem, instead accept that moths are here in greater numbers now & create problems for many of us throughout the year!
