Why are moths drawn to light?
Some types of moths are known to migrate, and it's possible that the night sky gives them navigational clues. A moth's up-down orientation might depend in part on the brightness of the sky relative to the ground. Some lepidopterists (moth and butterfly scientists) suggest that moths use the moon as a primary reference point and have the ability to choose their flight paths as the Earth's rotation causes the moon to move across the sky. (There is even evidence to support the theory that migrating moths have an internal geomagnetic compass system to guide them in the right direction.) So a moth's attraction to an artificial light or to a fire could be related to orientation, and lead to disorientation -- the moth wasn't "expecting" to actually get to "the moon" (the light source) or to be able to fly above it, so confusion results.
What type of moths do I have?
First you need to figure out what kind of moths... if you're finding small brownish moths in your kitchen cupboards or pantry. They tunnel into boxes and bags of grains, flour, etc. and gum up the contents with stringy webs and cocoons. If they are meal moths, you can get very effective glue moth traps for them.
Does keeping cupboards clean prevent moths?
moths have nothing to do with cleanliness, they can infiltrate the most spotless of homes. They are small, silver and black moths that fly in, or are brought in to the home in food. This is the season when they breed and once you've got them it takes diligence and energy to get rid of them. Tips:1 You can buy strips to place in your food store cupboard. Male clothes moths are attracted to the trap by pheromones contained in a slow release strip, then caught on the glue inside the trap. Consequently, infestation is reduced as females do not mate.2 Keep all food especially pulses, grains; nuts and rice in sealed containers. You can check food packets and cupboards for signs of the moths by little silky-web like patches. 3 If you do find signs, just throw out all open food and spray clean the cupboard with any cleaning product. You could also use diluted tea tree oil, if you don't like using harsh cleaning products.
